  • Lettermark

The Lettermark’s informal presence is reserved for a close community or connection to the university.

The Lettermark must always be accompanied by a defining visual or verbal reference to Carnegie Mellon University (e.g., Carnegie Red, the Tartan pattern, Scotty, the written name of the institution, etc.).

The Lettermark features the initials "CMU" in a bold, red, serif typeface against a plain white background. The letters are capitalized and evenly spaced.

Dos & Don’ts

The red Lettermark centered on a white background the required "safe zone." A green square with a white checkmark is located in the bottom-left corner, signifying that this is a "DO" or a recommended best practice.

Do use the graphic file provided.

The image shows the letters "CM" in the Lettermark, but the letter "U" has been omitted. A red square with a white "X" is located in the bottom-left corner, signifying that this is a "DON'T" or prohibited practice.

Don’t remove the “U.”

The red Lettermark is centered on a white background, surrounded by four diagonal arrows pointing outward from each corner, indicating that the mark should be scaled proportionally. A green square with a white checkmark is located in the bottom-left corner, signifying that this is a "DO" or a recommended best practice.

Do scale the entire Lettermark proportionately as a group.

The image shows the red Lettermark tightly cropped, so that the left and right of the mark are cut off. A red square with a white "X" is located in the bottom-left corner, signifying that this is a "DON'T" or prohibited practice.

Don’t bleed the Lettermark off the page.

The image shows a red three-ring binder. The white Lettermark is printed on the spine, rotated 90 degrees clockwise so that the letters read vertically from top to bottom. A green square with a white checkmark is located in the bottom-left corner, signifying that this is a "DO" or a recommended best practice.

Do rotate 90° (i.e., on the spine of a binder or shirt sleeve). Avoid curves, arcs or diagonal placement.

The image shows the initials "CMU" in a light blue color. Also, the letters have been rearranged so that they are not aligned on the same baseline; the "C" is raised, the "M" is lowered, and the "U" is lowered even more. A red square with a white "X" is located in the bottom-left corner, signifying that this is a "DON'T" or prohibited practice.

Don’t modify individual elements (letters) or curve, arc or angle them.

The white Lettermark is placed over dark gray Tartan background. The high contrast between the white Lettermark and the dark background ensures the mark remains clearly legible. A green square with a white checkmark is located in the bottom-left corner, signifying that this is a "DO" or a recommended best practice.

Do make the Lettermark legible when using a photographic or textured background.

The red Lettermark is positioned directly above another mark consisting of a circled letter "S" followed by the words "SAMPLE NAME" in a sans-serif font. The proximity of the two elements creates an unauthorized "lockup." A red square with a white "X" is located in the bottom-left corner, signifying that this is a "DON'T" or prohibited practice.

Don’t lock up to or position the Lettermark adjacent to another registered university trademark or any other text, logo, icon or graphic without written approval from UCM.
