Design elements are available to enhance your layouts while staying true to the Carnegie Mellon University brand identity.
Tartan patterns and Scotty Illustrations can give your design a boost. However, the Tartan and Scotty Mascot are registered trademarks of the university and must adhere to trademark policy. These design elements must not be recreated or manipulated without consulting University Communications & Marketing.

Tartan Patterns
The Tartan pattern is available for use by CMU faculty, staff and students to represent the different thoughts, interests, backgrounds and skills coming together at CMU. Use only the files provided for download.
Original Wool
The original fabric from the Carnegie clan. This version is not available for download.
Inquire with the University Bookstore for their selection of merchandise or to purchase this wool tartan fabric.
Dos & Don’ts
Do represent all thread colors when cropping.
Don’t crop the Tartan in a way that makes it appear like a different tartan.
Do consider the user experience, layout and visual distance when scaling.
Don’t scale the Tartan so that the layout becomes visually busy.
Do pair a photo next to a full-opacity Tartan.
Don’t use Tartans together.
Don’t fade a Tartan into a photo.
Scotty Illustrations
Scotty Illustrations are available for use by CMU faculty, staff and students to represent CMU spirit. All representations of Scotty must convey the traits of the Scottish Terrier breed: spirited, fearless, confident and relentless. Scotty is extremely loyal and a proven winner. Likewise, the Scotty mascot illustrations must always uplift the CMU brand and be portrayed acting within the rules of the Student Handbook. The Scotty Illustrations may only be used as decorative artwork in connection with university communications. Only use Scotty Illustrations that are available for download.

Dos & Don’ts
Scotty is a representation of CMU; therefore, the use of this artwork is a direct reflection of the university. UCM seeks to protect the university’s reputation by regulating the use of the mascot to prevent uses that are not supportive of the university’s mission or values and protect the university from the liability of misrepresentation.
Personal or non-university use is not permitted. Don’t share artwork with non-University parties unless authorized by UCM.
Do use Scotty Illustration in layouts.
Don’t alter Scotty Illustrations in any way aside from the color/pattern of the scarf.
Do place text or graphics near the illustration, but not touching.
There is only one Scotty. Don’t create similar Scottish Terriers in the same material.
Do follow the trademark licensing procedure for Scotty Illustrations used on merchandise.
A Scotty Illustration may not be used as a logo for a specific unit, initiative or student organization.
Don’t create a generative AI or 3D version of Scotty.
